Softball Holds on for 6-5 win over Gardner-Webb

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Freshman Raina O'Neal made her first career triple count as she brought home the go-ahead RBI in the seventh inning to help Texas Tech escape their first game at the Easton Bama Bash with a 6-5 victory over Gardner-Webb Friday at Rhoads Stadium.
Texas Tech (7-4) led 5-1 entering the bottom of the sixth before the Runnin' Bulldogs (5-11) rallied to tie the score. With the bases loaded and two outs, GWU's Megan Gibbons connected on a bases-clearing double over the head of left fielder Sarah Weber to even the contest at 5-5.
The Red Raiders were quick to break the tie in the top of the seventh as senior Devon Thomey earned a leadoff walk and was brought home two batters later by O'neal. Thomey, who leads the team with a .478 batting average, finished 1-2 with a walk, run and RBI, while O'Neal went 2-4 with the one RBI.
It was a team effort for the Red Raider pitching staff with senior Mattison Maisel getting her third win of the season, going 2.0 innings in relief and surrendering four runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout. Freshman Hannah Broseman started the game going 3.1 innings strong and gave up just one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Senior Dominique Alcocer provided 1.2 innings of middle relief and gave up just one hit while recording one strikeout.
Play continues in Tuscaloosa this evening with the Red Raiders set to tackle No. 10 Alabama at 6 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+ and the WatchESPN app.
KEY MOMENT
Sophomore Raina O'Neal's first career triple in the top of the seventh scored the go-ahead run to push Tech to the 6-5 victory.
POST-GAME NOTES
- With an RBI double in the fifth inning, senior Devon Thomey has hit safely in six consecutive games and recorded an RBI in three straight. She has eight RBI in the last six games.
- Freshman Raina O'Neal has hit safely in seven of 11 games to start her career, including the go-ahead triple in the seventh, her first career triple.
- Sophomore Jessica Hartwell has hit safely in four of her last five games. She also recorded a career-high three stolen bases.
- Senior Ashley Fultz reached base in all three trips to the plate with a walk in the third, double in the fifth and reaching by error in the sixth.
- Senior Mattison Maisel now sits at 3-1 on the season, joining freshman Kassidy Scott (3-2) as the team-leader in wins.Â
