Player's Blog: Memories Made in Mexico
February 25, 2017 | Softball
Coming off a tough weekend at Texas State, we had about 36 hours to recover and re-pack our bags to get ready for our next tournament. Not only was this a quick turnaround, this was Texas Tech softball's first international escapade!! As you can imagine, nerves were high to turn in classwork, but more important to make sure everything was packed and ready, especially that new cute bathing suit to get the perfect sunset beach pic…ok just me? As the hours passed by seemingly slow, before we knew it we were loading our bags into the bus and heading to the airport.
We landed in the city of Puerto Vallarta, and everyone was getting anxious thinking about the amazing trip we had planned for the next few days. For many people, this was their first international trip, and were so thankful we could experience with teammates. The next couple of hours were passed being amazed by fruit-sniffing police dogs, and the unsettled look on everyone's faces as they pressed the magical button (praying it turned green). Once we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted by the most gracious and helpful staff who helped us get our luggage upstairs, and then it was time to explore the beautiful beach we got to call home for the next week.

Waking up the next day in paradise was nothing short of amazing, but the best part of our trip was about to begin. We spent our first morning visiting a local school to talk about the game of softball, and to teach the students drills that they could practice in various positions. This was one of the most rewarding experiences we have had as a team, and to nobody's surprise, we ended up in a dance battle showing off our best moves. The students and staff were all so kind and gracious towards us, and we even got invited back! After saying our goodbyes, we hit the dirt to get some work in to get ready to go compete.
Although we were there for business, Coach G managed to slip some fun in for us before it was time to go start playing. We headed up a mountain and went zip lining for an adrenaline rush that lasted the rest of the weekend. We zip lined forwards ,backwards, upside down, two at a time, three at a time, and any which way you could imagine. The boys at Canopy River Tours were hilarious and sure knew how to have a good time!!
Over the next few days, we played some great softball against some really quality teams. The crowds were always electric, and the music was always blaring out of the speakers as our names were announced in Spanish, sending the fans into a frenzy. We ended the weekend winning three and losing two, and learning a lot on our way. We played some great team softball, and to cap off the weekend we came away with a win against nationally ranked No. 21 Fresno State. This was a huge team win for us, and we are excited to use this momentum throughout our weekend in Tuscaloosa and beyond. Adios, amigos!
