Tulsa Pulls Away Late to Down Red Raiders
March 12, 2017 | Softball
Red Raiders return home next week for the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic March 17-18.
TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa broke open a scoreless ballgame with four runs in the bottom of the fifth before tacking on three more in the sixth to top the Red Raiders, 7-0, Sunday on the final day of the Tulsa Invitational.
Â
Texas Tech (13-11) was held to three hits in the contest while Tulsa (14-9) compiled 11, six of which came in the fifth and sixth innings when Tulsa did their damage.
Â
Tech's Kassidy Scott (6-6) was able to hold the Golden Hurricane in check through four innings thanks to a solid defensive effort behind her that turned a double play in the first and committed just one error. The Piedmont, Okla., native turned in 4.2 innings, surrendering eight hits and four runs with a strikeout and two walks in the loss.
Â
The Golden Hurricanes got on the board in the fifth thanks to an RBI double off the wall in left field that scored a runner from first. After the next batter singled through the right side, first baseman Tori Stafford sent a three-run homer over the left field fence.
Â
Senior Mattison Maisel then came on and got a strikeout to end the fifth, but the Golden Hurricane struck again in the sixth with a two-run triple to right center followed by a two-out double that would plate a total of three more.
Â
Sophomore Kiana Workman led Tech offensively, reaching base in both of her plate appearances. She ripped a one-out single up the middle in the third inning, and then stole second base for her third stolen base of the season. In the sixth inning, she battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a leadoff walk, but was stranded at first.
Â
Tulsa's Emily Watson (10-3) picked up the win for Tulsa, tossing seven scoreless innings and striking out 12 Red Raiders.
Â
Texas Tech returns home next weekend as it host the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic at Rocky Johnson Field. The Red Raiders will play Saint Francis Friday, March 17, at 6:30 p.m., before a doubleheader Saturday against East Carolina and Saint Francis starting at 4:00 p.m.
