Bouwer Makes a Statement on Day One of UTSA Invite

Werner Bouwer breaks 16 year old javelin throw records in his first collegiate performance.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Day one of the UTSA Invitational brought four first-place finishes to the table, one of which was the men's javelin title.
Werner Bouwer, freshman from South Africa, started off his season with a second throw of 72.16m/236-9 to claim first place. This mark stands as a No. 3 Texas Tech outdoor record beating marks set by Rodrigo Zelaya in 1991 and 1993.
Following Bouwer in the javelin throw was Hunter Hopkins in fourth place with his 61.72m/202-6 mark and Ivan Santiago-Bravo in sixth throwing his best of 58.59m/192-2.
In the women's shot put, Crystal Onwukaife grabbed a first-place finish to begin her outdoor season with a 15.21m/49-11 throw. This mark is a lifetime best for Onwukaife beating her previous record of 14.79m/48-6.25 set at the Big 12 Indoor Championship this year.
Rianna Randolph and Clark Blunt also finished first in the women's 5,000-meter race and the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Randolph paced a 19:07.40 run while Blunt clocked a 9:56.75 race.
Dorleta Armendariz-Lasa and Alexis Lewis finished eighth and 10th in the women's hammer throw with best marks of 51.69m/169-7 and 49.63m/162-10 respectively.
Joacim Zuniga and Ebenether Wondaferew finished the night with their 5000-meter runs of 15:18.17 and 15:39.02.
Tomorrow, field events will start the day at 11 a.m. followed by the running events set to begin at 2 p.m. to wrap the two-day meet.
