T&F Makes Marks at Wes Kittley Invitational
March 25, 2017 | Track and Field
Texas Tech ends the day with four meet records and three stadium records.
ABILENE, Texas – Texas Tech track & field dominated the ACU Wes Kittley Invitational with 16 first-place finishes and 21 personal records this afternoon.
"What a beautiful day, this is the best weather we have had so far and I was really pleased with the good performances that it brought out," Head Coach, Wes Kittley said. Â "Charles Brown had huge jumps, one of his biggest was a scratch, but we were really pleased with him. Viershanie had a strong performance, what a great lead to have early on. I was also really proud of both of our 4x100 relays, this was the first run for our men, and the women are showing a lot of consistency which is great. Marika is learning to run the 400m so well and showed that today. The kids are learning to win so we just have to stay healthy and keep up the progress. Overall we looked a lot better as a team."
Viershanie Latham clinched the No. 2 Texas Tech record triple jump mark of 13.46m/44-2.00 (+2.1 wind) to win the meet title. Latham's mark also holds as a meet record.
After her triple jump performance, Latham placed third in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.04. This was Latham's second career 200m performance.
Sophomore Charles Brown had a 7.86m/25-9.50 long jump winning mark today. This also serves as a personal record for brown as well as a No. 8 Texas Tech record. Â
A first ever decathlon performance for Erin Lopez resulted in a 6,244 point finish for a meet and stadium record.
Both the men's and women's 4x100 relays had strong performances. The women's relay time of 44.59 produced by I'Shunique Hamilton, Marika Brown, Tiffani Johnson and Sara Limp earned them a first-place finish and new meet and stadium record. Darien Tennon, Andrew Hudson, Trevin Chambers and Steven Champlin yielded a 39.53 run for the 10th spot in Texas Tech outdoor records.
Drew McMichael claimed first in the men's pole vault with his personal-best outdoor clearance of 15.20m/17-0.75.
A new 400-meter personal best was posted by Marika Brown. The 53.55 run earned her first place as well as stadium and meet records.
Steven Champlin also had a strong first place 400-meter performance clocking a 46.25 dash.
Next up, qualifying Red Raiders will head to the big stage at Texas Relays in Austin next week on March 29 through April 1.
