Sofia Garcia leads the Lady Raiders in a tie for 12th overall at the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate
LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 24 Texas Tech opened the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate Championship with back-to-back 7-over 295 cards Monday to sit in a tie for seventh place after the first day at the Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Â
The Lady Raiders, the reigning Henssler Intercollegiate champion, will need to rally during Tuesday's third and final round as Tech trails first-day leader Purdue by 15 stroke. Tech can still make a run at a top-five finish as just three strokes separate the Lady Raiders from fifth-place Southern Miss.
Â
"We have some work to do tomorrow to get where we want to be," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "Once a couple of putts fall, we will be in good shape. We're looking forward to the challenge ahead tomorrow."
Â
Sofia Garcia paced the Lady Raiders early as she fired a 4-under 68 opening round that placed her in a tie for second after the first 18 holes. She followed with a 5-over card in the afternoon session that dropped her into a tie for 12th individually which is the highest among Tech's lineup.
Â
Mami Yamamoto trails Garcia by two strokes in a tie for 19th overall after an even-par opening round that was followed by a 3-over card. She'll be looking for her second top-20 finish this season Tuesday and the fifth of her career.
Â
Lauren Mason, meanwhile, contributed to both of Tech's scores on the day with a 5-over card to start the tournament followed by a 1-over score in the afternoon. She is in a tie for 39th individually, one stroke ahead of Cara Barker, who fired a 7-over opening round before finishing even over the next 18 holes to sit in a tie for 48th overall.
Â
Gabby Barker completed Tech's day in a tie for 59th overall as she was 6-over during the morning session before bouncing back with a 3-over card later in the day.
Â
Purdue leads the 14-team field at 1-under for the tournament while Memphis is three strokes back in second place. Kent State, Maryland and Southern Miss round out the top five while Illinois is in sixth place, one stroke ahead of the Lady Raiders and Virginia Tech.
Â
Tuesday's final round is slated for an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Live coverage will be provided throughout the round on GolfStat.com as well as @TexasTechWGolf on Twitter.
