The Red Raiders go 2-1 Saturday at the Lone Star College Showcase in Dallas
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball wrapped up its spring season with a bang, going 2-1 Saturday against three Big 12 rivals at the Lone Star College Showcase in Dallas, held at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.
Â
The Red Raiders started things off with an impressive 2-1 victory over Texas (28-26, 21-25, 15-13), the national runner-up in 2016.
Â
Tech then shifted courts and fell in a tight battle against Oklahoma, 2-1 (25-21, 16-25, 15-12).
Â
The Red Raiders quickly regrouped and took down TCU, 2-0 (25-15, 26-24), to end the day and put a bow on the program's second spring under the direction of head coach Tony Graystone.
Â
"Today was a great day for Red Raider volleyball, and a perfect ending to our spring season. I loved how we competed, executed and found ways to win big points. Everyone stepped up and made an impact, and it was great to see how things are starting to come together. These were important wins today and will give us a lot of positive momentum heading into next season.
Â
Saturday's event was Tech's third of the spring. The Red Raiders hosted the Texas Tech Spring Tournament March 25, defeating UT Permian Basin (25-13, 30-28), Abilene Christian (25-15, 25-20) and Cisco College (25-12, 25-11) before splitting sets with Angelo State (23-25, 25-10). Tech later defeated Wayland Baptist 5-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-13, 25-23, 15-9) on April 6 at United Supermarkets Arena.
Â
Texas Tech returns 13 student-athletes from last year's squad, including junior libero Reyn Akiu, who posted the school's second-highest single-season dig total last fall on her way to All-Big 12 Second Team honors. The squad also welcomed in midterm transfer Missy Owens, who hails from Long Beach State where she ranked second in the Big West in 2016 averaging 10.56 assists per set.
