Lauren Mason powered Texas Tech with a 1-over 73 Friday at the Big 12 Championships
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 27 Texas Tech got off to a slow start at the Big 12 Championships on Friday as the Lady Raiders fired a 16-over-par 304 card to start the three-day tournament at The Dominion Country Club.
Â
Despite ranking ninth in the nine-team field, the Lady Raiders are not far out of contention as only eight strokes separate Tech from third-place Kansas. Tech is seven strokes out of a tie for fourth and five back of fifth-place Baylor.
Â
"I was hoping for a better day and I know the team was, too," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "Good news is that we still have 36 holes left and we aren't out of it. One good round tomorrow will put us where we want to be."
Â
Lauren Mason and Sofia Garcia led the Lady Raiders over the opening 18 holes with Mason carding a 1-over 73 that was one stroke better than Garcia. Mason ended the day in a tie for ninth individually while Garcia, playing in her first career conference tournament, was in a tie for 14th overall.
Â
Cara Barker and Mami Yamamoto recorded Tech's other counting scores with 6-over and 7-over rounds, respectively, to sit 31st and 37th on the individual leaderboard. Gabby Barker chipped in Tech's final score on the day with a 10-over card.
Â
"We've shown all year long that we're a good second-round team," Robertson added. "We seem to always get off to a slow start and fight our way back. That's what we've seemed to be doing well. There's nothing we can do about today. We just need to be ready to play tomorrow."
Â
No. 6 seed TCU claimed the first-day lead after firing a 5-over 293 opening round. The Frogs lead defending champion Oklahoma State by one stroke while Kansas is in third at 8-over and Texas and Iowa State are in fourth at 9-over each.
Â
Baylor, the highest-ranked team coming into the tournament, ended the day in sixth place while Kansas State and Oklahoma are tied for seventh, three strokes ahead of Tech.
Â
The Lady Raiders will look to bounce back during Saturday's second round where Tech will be in the 8 a.m. tee group alongside K-State and Oklahoma. Live results will be available throughout the day at Golfstat.com. Â
