Tech Wraps Up Windy First Round At Prairie Dunes
April 24, 2017 | Men's Golf
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The No. 11 Texas Tech men's golf team fought wind gusts in excess of 45 miles per hour during Monday's first round of the Big 12 Championship, landing in fifth place through 18 holes at Prairie Dunes.
The teams were originally scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday, but it was determined the second round would be pushed to Tuesday due to high winds.
On multiple occasions throughout the round, the Red Raiders had potential putts shoved off of the green by the wind before they could be lined up. When the dust settled, Tech was in fifth place (+29), having battled back up the leaderboard after spending the early part of the day near the bottom.
The Red Raiders are just seven shots off the lead, and are only three shots out of second place.
"Anytime you have winds like this, you know a championship golf course is going to give you all you can handle," head coach Greg Sands said. "We aren't necessarily happy with where we are, but we also aren't standing there scratching our heads wondering what happened. We didn't have a great start and we got behind the 8-ball early, but I like the way we battled back. We did some good things in spots."
The Red Raiders were led by sophomore Ivan Ramirez, who is tied for second overall, after carding a 3-over 73. Ramirez was pretty consistent throughout, registering 11 pars during Monday's round.
"I'm really happy of the way Ivan [Ramirez] fought," Sands said. "He really kept us in the tournament today. I think we had some guys who hung in there, and others let the conditions get to them. However, I believe everyone, even those who struggled out there, can take some valuable lessons into tomorrow's 36 holes. Seven shots on this course with 54 holes to go is nothing, especially if we get some more wind."
Joining Ramirez in the individual top 20 are Federico Zucchetti (+7, T-12), and Hurly Long (+8, T-18). Fredrik Nilehn (+11) is tied for 33rd, and Hannes Ronneblad (+14) is in a tie for 42nd.
The Red Raiders will be joined by Texas in tomorrow's second pairing, which will begin at 8:22 a.m., off the No. 10 tee. Tech will play both of tomorrow's rounds with the Longhorns, and pairings will be readjusted before Wednesday's final 18 holes.
