Tech Finishes Well, Takes 4th At Big 12 Championship
April 26, 2017 | Men's Golf
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The No. 11 Texas Tech men's golf team finished strong with the second-lowest round of the day to close the Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes in fourth place on Wednesday.
The Red Raiders (+63) had the earliest tee time of the day, which meant high winds and a 27-degree wind chill to begin the round. However, Tech played a very steady 18 holes, finishing with a 16-over 286, the second-lowest round carded among competitors on Wednesday.
In the process, Tech not only leapfrogged No. 13 Oklahoma in the final standings, but also No. 4 Baylor, who the Red Raiders were paired with for the final 18. Faced with the challenge of playing alongside the Bears, the Red Raiders were up to the task, finishing eight shots better on the day than their playing counterpart.
"I think the guys showed a lot of courage to come out and play well through these conditions," Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "They really battled, especially on the early holes when it was really cold and windy. For us to have the earliest tee time and still nearly shoot the low round of the day gives me confidence, and it should give the guys confidence as well."
Leading the way for the Red Raiders was Fredrik Nilehn, who birdied three of his last five holes to shoot an even-par 70, which tied for the best individual round of the day. The effort pushed him into the individual top 10 in a tie for ninth (+14), which meant All-Big 12 honors for the junior out of Sweden.
Joining Nilehn in the top 10 and earning All-Big 12 recognition as well was Colombian sophomore Ivan Ramirez, who shot a 75 on Wednesday, which paired with Monday's 72 and his rounds of 73 and 74 on Tuesday, landed him in a tie for sixth, at 14-over. This is the first All-Big 12 honor for both Red Raiders.
Just missing out on the top 10 was Federico Zucchetti, who tied for 16th, at 18-over. Hannes Ronneblad rebounded from a first-round 84 to finish in 33rd (+24), and Hurly Long rounded out the Red Raider effort with a 28th-place finish (+22).
"I think playing a course like this in these conditions is going to really help us out down the line, especially if we land in a difficult regional," Sands said. "The golf anywhere else may feel pretty easy after this. I think we learned some lessons, particularly patience, this week that will pay dividends for us going forward."
The Red Raiders now wait until May 4, which is when they will learn their NCAA Regional destination. Tech is expected to make its 16th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance, which will take place May 15-17, at a location to be determined. A top-five team finish there will advance the Red Raiders to the NCAA Championships, May 26-31, in Sugar Grove, Ill.
