LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech had six student-athletes recognized for their work in the classroom this week as part of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards.
Recent NFL Draft first-round selection Patrick Mahomes II as well as softball outfielders Kierra Miles and Kiani Ramsey highlighted Tech's list of recipients as first-team honorees. Rebekah O'Brien (soccer) and Trey Culver, the reigning NCAA Champion in the high jump, earned second and third team accolades, respectively, while Recee Caldwell (women's basketball) garnered a honorable mention selection.
The Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards are designed to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr's commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, the award is open to all student-athletes at U.S. colleges or universities.
In order to be nominated, student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and be active on their campuses or in their community. Texas Tech's nominations were selected by the academic staff at the Marsha Sharp Center for Student-Athletes.
