The sophomore lefty is the eighth Red Raider invited to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball's Steven Gingery has been invited to play for USA Baseball's 2017 Collegiate National Team this summer, it was announced today.
Â
The sophomore left-hander is the eighth Red Raider to earn an invitation from USA Baseball and the first since RHP Chad Bettis in 2009.
Â
In 1997, catcher Josh Bard and RHP Monty Ward played for the team, while Larry Hays served as assistant coach. The next year, Bard joined RHP Shane Weight on the squad, as outfielder Miles Durham was also selected for the team. Outfielder Roger Kieschnick was named to the summer squad in 2006 & 2007, before Tech's last team member in Bettis.
Â
Gingery has put together an impressive 8-1 record in 2017 behind 12 starts. His win total leads the Big 12 and is 11th in the NCAA. He also tops the conference in ERA, while ranking second in strikeouts and WHIP.
Â
Over the course of the 2017 season, Gingery has racked up several honors from the conference and other national outlets. After the second week of the year, he was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week. On April 4, he picked up midseason All-America accolades from D1 Baseball and Perfect Game, then was added to the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list (April 12). Earlier this week, he was placed on the College Baseball Foundation's Pitcher of the Year Semifinalist list, after finding his way onto the watch list on April 18.
Â
The 2017 Collegiate National Team will train at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina, and compete in a series of games with teams from the Coastal Plains League from June 20-25. The U.S. will then host international friendship series against Chinese Taipei and Cuba from June 27-July7, in Cary, Charlotte and Durham, North Carolina. Both series will be streamed live on USABaseball.com.
Â
Gingery and the Red Raiders return to action for their final home series of the regular season on May 18-20, hosting Kansas at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
