NCAA Championships Second Round Pushed to Sunday
May 20, 2017 | Women's Golf
Tournament will move to a 54-hole format with 18 holes on both Sunday and Monday
SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The second round of the NCAA Championships was canceled Saturday after thunderstorms and consistent rain made Rich Harvest Farms – the site of this weekend's tournament – unplayable.
Due to the postponement, the NCAA has announced that the originally-scheduled 72-hole format will be condensed to 54 holes to determine the individual medalist as well as the eight teams that will advance to match play. Play will resume Sunday morning with 18 holes followed by a third and final round on Monday.
Tech will remain with a 1:36 p.m. CT tee time Sunday as the NCAA will use the same pairings that were originally set for Saturday. Pairings for Monday's third round will be determined based on the team leaderboard at the 36-hole mark.
The Lady Raiders will need to rally over the next two days in order to advance to match play for the second time in the past three seasons. Tech battled cold and wet conditions Friday as the Lady Raiders opened the tournament in 24th place after a 47-over-par 335 card.
The entire field struggled with the conditions Friday as Tech was one of a handful of schools to shoot a higher-than-normal round. The likes of No. 2 Alabama, No. 5 Florida State, No. 8 Duke and No. 9 Furman are all sitting at 35-over-par or higher heading into Sunday's round.
Northwestern leads the tournament at 13-over followed by Kent State two strokes back in second place. The remaining top-eight teams include Ohio State, Arizona State, Stanford and Baylor all in a tie for third at 23-over as well as seventh-place South Carolina (+25) and North Carolina (+26).
