LUBBOCK, Texas – Former Texas Tech volleyball star Amanda Dowdy matched the best professional finish of her career last weekend as she and teammate Irene Pollock posted a third-place finish at the Austin Open.
Â
Dowdy, who is originally from the Austin area, and Pollock, also a native Texan, were the crowd favorites at the event, which was the second of the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) tour season and the AVP's first tour stop in Austin since 2005. The third place finish garnered the tandem $7,000 worth of winnings.
Â
After an opening round win, the duo took down the tournament's top seed of Betsi Flint and Kelley Larsen with a 21-12, 14-21, 15-9 victory to highlight the weekend.
Â
Dowdy, a four-year starter for the Red Raiders from 2008-11, now has a top-three finish in each of the last three AVP seasons. She looks to team with Pollock for the remainder of the AVP Tour and build on her four top 10 finishes from 2016.
Â
The Lexington, Texas native, who is now based out of Redondo Beach, California, wrapped her illustrious career as a Red Raider in 2011 as the only two-time All-Big 12 first team selection in school history.
Â
One of the most prolific attackers in program history, Dowdy recorded 1,495 kills over her career which still ranks second all-time at Texas Tech. Her name is also prominently featured in the Tech single-season and single-game sections of the record book.
