Five Red Raiders Punch Tickets to Nationals on Day One

Four athletes also produced marks to advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinals.
AUSTIN, Texas – Day one of the NCAA West Preliminary brought forth five Texas Tech national championship -qualifying performances and four quarterfinal advancements. Â
The long jumpers make up a majority of the advancements to Eugene, totaling three entries.
Freshman Justin Hall was the first to qualify in the long jump with his 7.81m/25-7.50 mark. This distance came on his third attempt, giving him a fourth-place overall finish in his first-ever NCAA West Preliminary appearance.
Another freshman qualifying mark came from Zuliat Alli. She had an enormous personal-best leap on her second attempt, reaching 6.40m/21-0 (+2.2w). This was over an eight-inch improvement from her previous personal record set at the Red Raider Shootout. Today's slightly-windy mark mad Alli just short of securing the all-time school record.
Senior Viershanie Latham was the third to join in the long jump. Latham's final attempt secured her ticket to Eugene at a mark of 6.31m/20-8.50.
Another performance to move on to nationals came from Werner Bouwer in the men's javelin. The freshman not only won a Big 12 title in his first ever championship appearance, but has now qualified to compete on the national stage at Hayward Field.
Wrapping up day one for the Red Raiders in the 10,000-meter race was Jocelyn Caro, who claimed an eleventh-place finishing time of 34:57.94 to punch her ticket.
Advancing to the 400-meter quarterfinals is Steven Champlin and Kyle Collins, who paced 45.93 and 46.36 runs respectively.
Representing the 400-meter hurdles was Darien Tennon, who finished his race clocking a 51.29 run to make it to the quarterfinal round.
Charles Jones had a 1:50.66 run in the 800-meter that earned him first in his heat in order to automatically qualify for tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Tomorrow's competition will pick up at noon for the Red Raiders, with Drew McMichael competing in the men's pole vault. Â
