Three All-Americans Added to the Count
June 11, 2017 | Track and Field
Two First Team and one Second Team All-Americans increase the weekend count to 10.
EUGENE, Oregon – The Red Raiders finished their 2017 Outdoor Championships showing this evening at Historic Hayward Field with three student-athletes competing in the women's heptathlon, high jump and triple jump to garner All-American honors. These three additions bring the weekend total to 10.
First Team All-American honors were earned by senior Viershanie Latham in her finale performance for the Red Raiders in the women's triple jump. Latham improved on each of her first three jumps to conclude the event with a slightly windy best mark of 13.45m/44-1.50 for a fifth-place finish overall.
Latham also jumped No. 5 and No. 7 all-time school record leaps in her first and last attempts in the finals. The fifth-ranked mark tied her previous record of 13.17m/43-2.50 made at the Red Raider open in 2015.
Kaylee Hinton concluded her first nationals heptathlon outing this evening in the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run. These performances put Hinton at a grand-total of 5,580 points, allowing her to acquire First Team All-American honors with her eighth-place finish.
Despite the strong rain and slight hail rolling in just before her throw, Hinton recorded a lifetime-best in the javelin competition. The 37.25m/122-2 throw was over a three-foot improvement from her previous best-mark made at the Big 12 Championship in Lawrence, Kansas.
In the women's high jump, Zarriea Willis took 11th-place for her 1.82m/5-11.50 final clearance. Â This was Willis' second outdoor championships appearance, yet first time to bring home All-American honors from Eugene.
                                    All-Americans
Next up, nine Red Raiders will travel to the USATF Junior & Senior National Championships on June 22-25 in Sacramento, California.
