June 12, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
Non-conference schedule highlighted by trips to east and west coasts to take on Power Five conference programs.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech volleyball program and head coach Tony Graystone announced its 2017 schedule on Monday, which features opponents from the SEC, ACC and Pac 12 in addition to 12 matches at United Supermarkets Arena.
Â
"We've put together a really nice 2017 schedule," Graystone said. "It's going to give us an opportunity to get the team ready for the Big 12 and also play out of our region against teams we don't normally see. I feel good about the schedule we've set for this group, and we can't wait to get started."
Â
After opening the season with a tournament at Houston Baptist on Aug. 25-26, Texas Tech will travel to Berkeley, Calif., Sept. 1-2 where it will take on Cal, Dartmouth and Eastern Washington. The Red Raiders journey east two weeks later for a road match at Georgia on Sept. 13 and a tournament at Clemson Sept. 15-16 with matchups against the Tigers, South Carolina and Georgia Southern.
Â
"I'm especially excited about our trips to California, Georgia and South Carolina," Graystone stated. "Those will be big weekends to travel and play other Power Five schools in their gyms. We're going to have several new players on the floor this year, so it's going to be important for us to come together quickly and learn how to compete and win during the nonconference schedule."
Â
The bout against Georgia will be Tech's first against an SEC program since 2010 when it faced Mississippi. Similarly, Tech's matchup with Clemson is its first versus an ACC school since 2012 against Boston College.
Â
The home slate begins Monday, Sept. 4, with a match against Abilene Christian. Later that week, the Red Raider Classic will take place featuring The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Lamar and UC Riverside Sept. 8-9. The meeting with UTRGV will be the first of 13 total matches against 2016 NCAA Tournament teams for the Red Raiders.
Â
Texas Tech starts Big 12 play Sept. 20 at Baylor, and opens its conference home slate the following week with West Virginia (Sept. 27) and Iowa State (Sept. 29) coming to town.
Â
After road dates at Oklahoma (Oct. 4) and Kansas State (Oct. 7), the Red Raiders will close the month of October with four out of five conference battles at home, including TCU (Oct. 14), Texas (Oct. 18), Baylor (Oct. 25) and Kansas State (Oct. 28).
Â
The month of November features road games at Texas (Nov. 4), West Virginia (Nov. 11), TCU (Nov. 15) and the season finale at Iowa State (Nov. 25). The Red Raiders welcome Oklahoma to Lubbock on Wednesday, Nov. 8, and will hold senior night on Friday, Nov. 17, against Kansas.
