Red Raider Golf Ready For Trinity Forest
September 23, 2017 | Men's Golf
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 11 Texas Tech men's golf team is ready to tee off in its second tournament of the 2017-18 season this Sunday at the inaugural Trinity Forest Invitational at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas, Texas.
The course, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, will become the future home of the PGA TOUR's AT&T Byron Nelson Championship, as well as NCAA invitational tournaments, professional and amateur events.
The Trinity Forest Invitational, hosted by SMU, features a strong list of competitors. Tech is one of seven teams in the field ranked in the top-50 of Golfweek's Collegiate Rankings.
"We are thrilled to be able to participate in this tournament," Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "Trinity Forest will present an unfamiliar challenge for our team, but I know they're excited to play it. The course will be hosting the Byron Nelson in the upcoming years, so it's a neat experience for our guys, and I know they'll be ready for the test."
Representing the Red Raiders will be Hurly Long, Fredrik Nilehn, Sandy Scott, Ivan Ramirez and Adam Blomme. Kyle Hogan will play as an individual.
The tournament will comprise of three rounds, with the first round starting at 8:20 a.m. CT on Sunday.
The Red Raiders look to build off an exciting start to the 2016-17 season, following a second-place finish at the Carmel Cup earlier this month. Tech shot a combined 38-under as a team, finishing well ahead of then No. 2 Vanderbilt and the defending NCAA Champion, No. 3 Oklahoma.
Four Red Raiders finished under par, including Sandy Scott (-9, 10th place), Fredrik Nilehn (-7, t-13th) and Wes Artac (-1, t-30th).
Along with a second place finish, the Red Raiders performance at the Carmel Cup was highlighted by a historic performance for senior Hurly Long. Long finished the weekend at 19-under, highlighted by a Pebble Beach course record 61 during the second round. Long's incredible weekend earned him an individual title, which was the second-straight for Tech at the Carmel Cup.
