Softball Sweeps First Day in Houston

Red Raiders close their stay with two more against Lamar and Houston Sunday.
HOUSTON – Texas Tech softball opened its first day in Houston with an 8-1 win over Lamar before an impressive 7-0 shutout of Houston on Saturday at Cougar Stadium.

The Red Raiders improve to 5-0 for the fall with two more contests on deck Sunday in Houston. Tech will face Lamar at 9 a.m. and Houston at 11:30 a.m.

DePaul transfer Missy Zoch delivered a complete-game shutout against the Cougars, allowing just two hits while striking out nine. Missouri transfer Trenity Edwards and sophomore Kelcy Leach both homered for Tech.

The Red Raiders, who lost twice to Houston on opening weekend last spring, got on the board in the third inning on an RBI triple from junior Karli Hamilton. Tech added three in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the seventh.

In the contest against Lamar, Tech erupted for seven first-inning runs off three home runs. Sophomore Breanna Russell got the scoring started with a three-run shot, Edwards made it back-to-back jacks and senior Taylor Satchell tacked on a two-run shot.

Sophomore Erin Edmoundson tossed three innings in the start before giving way to freshman Morgan Hornback in the fourth. The Cardinal pushed their lone run across in the second inning with a two-out double.

Following Sunday's games, Tech will wrap up its fall season Oct. 10-12 with the Red & Black Series at Rocky Johnson Field. Game times are set for 6 p.m. Wednesday and 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
