LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech football program recorded its most Academic All-Big 12 selections since 2002 Thursday as 22 different Red Raiders were recognized for their work in the classroom.
The Red Raiders placed 12 student-athletes on the first team and 10 more on the second team en route to finishing four shy of the single-season school record set in 2000 (26). Tech also had 22 student-athletes honored in both 2001 and 2002 and had 24 recognized in 1999.
Michael Barden led the list of honorees as he was named to the first team for a third-consecutive year, while Zach Austin and Jax Welch were recognized for a second-straight season. They were joined on the first team by a list of first-time honorees in Jack Anderson, Travis Bruffy, Lonzell Gilmore, Kolin Hill, Jacob Hines, Jeremiah McCutcheon and Giovanni Pancotti. Eli Howard was also named to the first team after earning second-team honors in 2017.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or over the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
