November 23, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
Tech finishes the regular season 17-13 overall for second-straight winning season.
AMES, Iowa – Texas Tech volleyball closed its 2018 season on Friday with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-22) loss at Iowa State in front of 2,652 fans at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
Â
The Red Raiders (17-13, 6-10), who defeated the Cyclones in four sets in September, were out of sorts early and managed just .117 hitting on the night to Iowa State's .424.
Â
Jess Schaben led ISU (16-13, 9-7) to its fourth straight win with 16 kills on .483 hitting while Grace Lazard added 13 at a .867 clip.
Â
Junior Emily Hill led Tech with 10 kills and nine digs. Freshman Brooke Kanas had seven kills on .250 hitting while junior Chandler Atwood added six kills.
Â
The Cyclones out-blocked the Red Raiders 8-2 and committed only nine attack errors for the match after posting 24 during their four-set loss in Lubbock.
Â
Tech finishes the year seventh in the Big 12 standings, right where it was picked in the Big 12 Preseason Poll. The Red Raiders eclipsed their 2017 regular season and Big 12 win totals to tally back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2000-01.
Â
Senior Katy Keenan finished with four kills in her final match as a Red Raider, while fellow senior Missy Owens had 26 assists and six digs and setter Kyndal Cowan also received time. Freshman Jessica Langridge entered during the third set for her first career Big 12 action.
Â
Tech dug itself into a hole in the first set before using a 5-0 scoring run to force a Cyclone timeout at 22-14. Herbst had Iowa State's final three kills of the opening set to give the Cyclones the 1-0 advantage.
Â
Hill recorded Tech's first ace of the night early in the second set, and later put away a kill that kept Tech connected to ISU at 15-11. The Cyclones would respond with nine of the next ten points to secure the second stanza.
Â
In the third set, Tech trailed by just one at 12-11 before ISU went on a 6-1 scoring run after Karrington Jones exited the match with an ankle injury.
