Mary Nutter Classic Highlights 2019 Softball Schedule
December 03, 2018 | Softball
Red Raiders will see half of the 2018 WCWS field during its upcoming spring slate.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head softball coach Adrian Gregory has announced the 2019 Red Raider softball schedule Monday, which features 24 home contests at Rocky Johnson Field and a trip to the nation's premier tournament.
Â
For the first time in program history, Texas Tech will take part in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, a four-day event that features 28 of the nation's top softball programs, including 2017 Women's College World Series teams Washington, Oregon, Arizona State and UCLA and Oklahoma. The Red Raiders will see three of those teams in Washington, Oregon and Arizona State while adding to the mix Duke, Long Beach State and an exhibition with Team Japan.
Â
The trip to Cathedral City, Calif., comes in week three and reflects yet another powerful nonconference slate for Gregory, entering year five at the helm. For the second straight year, Tech will see foes from every Power-5 Conference, including Kentucky and Auburn of the SEC, Nebraska and Wisconsin of the BIG 10, Duke of the ACC and the aforementioned PAC-12 at the MNCC.
Â
More than half of Tech's 53-game schedule will come against 2018 NCAA Tournament teams as the Red Raiders are set for 27 battles versus teams that made a regional last season. In addition to the WCWS teams on the docket, Kentucky will come to Lubbock for a three-game series to close out the regular season after advancing to the super regional round last season. Other 2018 NCAA Tournament foes include Auburn, Wisconsin, Long Beach State, New Mexico State, Drake and Jacksonville State.
Â
An exciting home slate begins with a pair of nonconference tournaments and a pair of doubleheaders against regional foes UTEP and New Mexico State. The Big 12 home slate this season features Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas, before the Red Raiders wrap up the season hosting Kentucky May 3-5 to gear up for the 2019 Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship in Oklahoma City.
Texas Tech opens its Big 12 home slate with seven-time defending Big 12 champs Oklahoma Mar. 22-24. After a trip to Ames, Tech will host in-state rival Texas Apr. 5-7 before traveling to Waco to face the Lady Bears. The Red Raiders return home for Easter weekend to close their Big 12 home slate against Kansas Apr. 18-20. Tech will round out Big 12 play at Oklahoma State Apr. 26-28 before hosting Senior Weekend May 3-5 against Kentucky.Â
Â
One of the youngest teams in the nation last season, Tech posted its first 30-win season of the Gregory era and gets set to welcome nine new faces for the 2019 season. Transfers Trenity Edwards (Missouri), Missy Zoch (DePaul) and Shelbye Henderson (Louisiana-Lafayette) add experience while six freshmen will enter the fold for a squad that returns all but one position starter, its top pitcher and All-American Jessica Hartwell.
