The Players' Journal: The Week One Experience
February 15, 2018 | Softball
Freshman Kelcy Leach provides insight into the team's first weekend of action.
After some long weeks of practice and scrimmaging against each other, it was nice to come together and work as a team. Going into the Aggie Classic, there were ?rst game jitters, but they quickly left after our ?rst win in extra innings. Knowing that o?season workouts and preseason camp was all for a feeling like that is one of the most rewarding experiences EVER.
The whole tournament was bitterly cold, some weather that was familiar to us Lubbock residents. We've practiced in worse weather, and it prepared us physically and mentally for the unpredictable weather that the weekend brought us. The coaching sta? did an outstanding job of preparing us for the teams and energy we would be up against. Although we knew the teams we would be competing against were tough and experienced, our goals did not change going into College Station.
Despite the result, we kept to our game and our process and had several small victories from inning to inning. The team got to work out a few kinks, ?gure out what works and what doesn't, and found little things to work out before Florida. After a long weekend, we came in on Tuesday ready to play and it was nice to get another win under our belts before UCF. We didn't just celebrate the little victories we celebrated a birthday too, adding another great memory to many that we made this weekend.
Every tournament brings new competition and experiences, each one making us better. The College Station tournament and UTA game gave us reassurance that we have what it takes and we WILL be great.
Orlando, here we come!
