Nilehn notches a hole-in-one in round one, and then a 66 in round two
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – It was quite a day for Red Raider senior Fredrik Nilehn, and that's saying a lot, considering the accolades the nation's No. 7 golfer has already piled up this year.
Nilehn registered a hole-in-one in round one and a bogey-free 66 in round two during the 36 holes No. 9 Texas Tech men's golf played at the Lamkin San Diego Classic, on Monday.
Nilehn's first 18 holes of the day started as a mixed bag, as he began with back-to-back bogeys before rattling of three-straight birdies. Then, he aced the 159-yard, par-3 11th to move to -3 on the round. From there, he notched two birdies in the next three holes before settling at -3 (69) for the first 18.
In the second round, he caught fire. Nilehn birdied two of his first five holes, snagged an eagle on the par-5 14th and logged two birdies in the final six holes to polish off a blemish-free 66 (-6).
For the tournament, Nilehn (-9) is in sole possession of first place by a shot. He already has a win and six top-15 individual finishes this season.
As a team, the Red Raiders (-4) sit in third place, after a rough start, which saw them fall as low as 14th in the loaded 16-team field. Tech's blistering 280 in the second round was the low card of the second stanza.
Individually, Hurly Long (-2) is tied for 12th, Sandy Scott (+4) is tied for 47th, Adam Blomme (+5) is tied for 60th, and Ivan Ramirez (+9) is tied for 83rd, to round out the team scoring.
Playing as an individual, Thomas Allkins (+9) is also tied for 83rd.
The Red Raiders will tee off in the tournament's final round on at 10 a.m. CT on Tuesday, with Golfstat providing live scoring.
