
Tech Tops UC Riverside to Close Spring Break Trip

Red Raiders finish 8-3 in California, open Big 12 play next weekend at No. 5 Oklahoma.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Texas Tech softball capped off its 10-day road trip to California with a 2-1 victory at UC Riverside on Sunday in its finale of the Highlander Invitational at Amy S. Harrison Field.

Redshirt freshman Michaela Cochran connected on her first career home run as Tech (20-10) scored two in the third to overcome a 1-0 deficit and capture its 20th win of the season.

The Red Raiders have now surpassed their 2017 win total with an 8-3 showing during its spring break trip to California. Tech posted back-to-back 4-1 weekends in Northridge and then in Riverside surrounding a midweek loss at No. 22 Long Beach State.

Cochran led the Red Raider offense with a 2-for-4 day. The outfielder hit safely in 7-of-11 games in California to maintain the team-lead in hits for the year with 41.

Junior Jessica Hartwell scored the go-ahead run in the third after Cochran's dinger. Hartwell singled and stole second before aggressively taking home on a slow grounder to first base, scoring what would end up as the deciding run for Tech.

UCR (21-9) took a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo homer from catcher Jenae Lockwood, who finished 1-for-2 with a walk. The Highlanders managed just three more hits in the contest.

Senior Cheyene Powell gave Tech a solid start in the circle. The Blanchard, Okla., native threw 3.1 innings and gave up just the one run on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

Freshman Erin Edmoundson came on in the fourth and finished the game for her 13th win of the year. The Deer Park, Texas, native totaled 3.2 innings of work without surrendering a hit and striking out four.
