No. 8 Tech Scores Season-High 22 Runs In Series Opener
March 23, 2018 | Baseball
The Red Raiders plate 22 runs on 16 hits in game one against the Huskies
Â
The Red Raiders (18-5) tallied a season-high 22 runs on 16 hits, scoring in each of the first eight innings against the Huskies (11-6). It's the most runs Tech has scored in a game since a 27-15 victory at New Mexico on April 26, 2017, and the second outing this year with over 20 runs.
Â
It was also the first time since April 18-19, 2014, against Prairie View A&M that Tech had scored in eight consecutive innings, this time coming in one game.
Â
Seven Tech batters put together multi-hit performances at the plate, led by sophomore outfielder Grant Little, who had a three-knock night with three RBI and three runs scored. Overall, eight different Red Raiders had a hit in Friday's contest.
Â
Junior right-handed pitcher Davis Martin picked up his fourth win of the year after tossing 5.0 frames, striking out seven. He allowed three runs on six hits to improve to 4-1 this season.
Â
The Red Raiders drew first blood in the opening frame, as a sacrifice fly by senior Michael Davis plated junior Cody Farhat, who singled with one out, for the 1-0 lead.
Â
Tech plated three more in the bottom of the second to push the advantage to 4-0. Five consecutive Red Raiders reached base, beginning with junior Cameron Warren via a double to right-center field. A HBP to junior Zayne Willems put two on for freshman Cody Masters, who stroked a double to the left field corner, scoring Warren for the first run of the frame. An infield single by freshman Gabe Holt & a sacrifice fly from sophomore Josh Jung brought home the other two runs, all with one out in the inning.
Â
Masters would drive in another in the third inning with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Warren from second to extend the score to 5-0. It was Masters' first game with multiple RBI this season and marked back-to-back multi-hit performances. He would also score three times on Friday.
Â
Tech added three more in the fourth starting with Jung, who shot a double to the gap in right-center, scoring Farhat for the 6-0 lead. His double would be fulfilled by Little two batters later, who crushed a no-doubt, two-run homer off the tree past left field to make it 8-0. It was Little's fourth dinger of the year.
Â
Northeastern got on the board in the fifth inning, plating two on a one-out double from Farrell. After a walk & single from McConnell & Holzwasser, respectively, Farrell sent a double just past the reach of Warren at first and to the wall to cut the lead to 8-2. The Huskies would get another with a two-out single through the right side of the infield from Fair to cut the deficit to 8-3.
Â
A bases-loaded walk to Jung with nobody out scored a run in Tech's next trip to the plate. With one away, Little sent an RBI single through the left side to left field, scoring Holt to make it 10-3. Warren would clear the bases with a two-out double to the left-center field wall, pushing Tech's lead to its largest of the night at 13-3.
Â
Sophomore RHP John Henry Gonzalez took over on the mound from there, tossing 2.0 innings, allowing just two hits and a walk, while striking out four.
Â
The Red Raiders added to the advantage with three more runs in the sixth. An error on a grounder by Farhat to the shortstop brought in Masters, who walked to begin the frame. Then, a single from Jung plated Holt, who also walked, to make it 15-3. A bases-loaded walk to senior Zach Rheams scored Farhat for the 16-3 lead.
Â
Six more runs were scored by Tech in the seventh, as a bases-loaded walk to Jung & a sacrifice fly from Davis recorded the first two of the inning. Then, with the bases juiced again, Rheams launched the team's first grand slam of the year over the camera crew in left-center field to push the lead to 22-3.
Â
It was Rheams' second home run in as many games, as he launched a two-run blast at Baylor on March 18.
Â
Sophomore righty Andrew Davis capped off the night by tossing 2.0 hitless frames, allowing one walk, while punching out two to cap the three hour & 20 minute contest.
Â
The Red Raiders return to action on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Huskies, beginning at noon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
