The Red Raiders score in double digits for third-straight contest
Â
The Red Raiders (19-5) scored in double digits for the third-straight contest, plating 12 runs on 13 hits against the Huskies (11-7). In the series opener, Tech produced a season-high 22 runs against Northeastern, tallying 20 in a game for the second time this season.
Â
Five Tech batters put together multi-hit games, with a representative from all four classes achieving the feat. Senior Michael Davis, junior Cameron Warren, sophomore Josh Jung and freshman Gabe Holt & Braxton Fulford all recorded two hits in the contest.
Â
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian made his first start of the year on Saturday, tossing a career-high 5.0 innings. The Flower Mound native allowed just one run on four hits, striking out one & walking two to improve to 2-1 this season.
Â
The Red Raiders struck first in the doubleheader opener, plating two in the second inning for a 2-0 lead. Both runs came across on a single from Holt to right field, plating senior Zach Rheams & Warren, who walked & singled with one out in the inning, respectively.
Â
Tech opened up a five-spot in the next frame, extending the advantage to 7-0. A sacrifice fly from sophomore Grant Little scored Jung for the first run of the inning. Then, Rheams demolished his third homer in as many games to right field to make it 4-0.
Â
Rheams' dinger was the start of five-straight base hits for the Red Raiders, as a single from Warren & a double from Fulford was fulfilled by freshman Cody Masters, who shot a two-RBI double to left-center field. Shortly after, Holt brought Masters home with a single to center field, completing the five-run inning & Tech's 20th game this season with at least three runs in a single frame.
Â
The Huskies would respond with a run of their own in their next trip to the plate, cutting the deficit to 7-1. A walk to Holzwasser & single from Farrell put runners on the corners with nobody out, allowing a sacrifice fly from Burt to bring the first run of the day home for Northeastern.
Â
Tech got the run back in the sixth thanks to a sacrifice fly from Rheams, plating Jung from third to make it 8-1. In the next half inning, Northeastern plated two to cut the Tech lead to 9-3. Three-straight hits produced a run, as an RBI single from McConnell plated Mazza. With two away, a bases-loaded walk to Farrell add another to make it 9-3.
Â
With one away in the bottom half of the seventh, junior Cody Farhat worked a full-count walk, then moved up to third behind a pair of stolen bases. He'd score in the next at-bat as Jung produced a productive out, driving in Farhat on a grounder to the shortstop for a 10-3 lead. A bases-loaded walk to Warren brought in Davis, who doubled after Farhat scored to make it 11-3.
Â
In the eighth, a leadoff walk & a wild pitch put Masters on second for Holt, who sent an RBI single to centerfield to score him for a 12-3 lead.
Â
Tech and Northeastern play game two of the doubleheader at 4 p.m. at Rip Griffin Park.
