Zach Smith turns his attention to the 3x3 National Championships on Friday and Saturday.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Texas Tech's Zach Smith nearly became the program's fourth champion of the State Farm College Slam Dunk Contest as part of NCAA Final Four weekend at Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary's University in San Antonio.
Smith garnered a runner-up finish in a field that featured eight competitors. He advanced to the semifinal round on a windmill jam where he took off from just inside the free throw line.
Smith registered a composite score of 87.36 during his two dunks in the semifinals. He punched his ticket to the championship round by catching a pass from Iowa State's Donovan Jackson off the side of the backboard and completing an acrobatic one-handed slam.
Smith once again utilized a pass from Jackson in the finals. This time, he caught the ball off the side of the backboard and went between his legs for a one-handed rim rock.
Smith captured a 48.94 final round score. It took a perfect 50 courtesy of Texas A&M Corpus Christi's Joseph Kilgore to win the title. Texas Tech's former champions in the event include Lance Hughes (1995), Darvin Ham (1996) and Andre Emmett (2004).
Smith will take the court for the newly-created 3x3 National Championships on Friday and Saturday at Bill Greehey Arena. The 32-team field features each conference broken into eight pools of four teams. The eight winners from each pool will move onto Sunday's championship bracket.
