Hartwell Named Big 12 Player of the Week
March 05, 2018 | Softball
Hartwell compiled six home runs and 19 RBI this week to lead the conference.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech claimed its second-straight Big 12 weekly accolade Monday as Jessica Hartwell was named the conference Player of the Week after smashing six home runs and driving in 19 RBI during the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic.
Â
This marks the second Big 12 weekly award of Hartwell's career after earning the honor in May of 2017. Tech has now won back-to-back Big 12 weekly honors for the first time since 2011 after freshman pitcher Erin Edmoundson was tabbed Big 12 Pitcher of the Week last week.
Â
In seven games last week. Hartwell hit .440 with six home runs, two triples, a double and 19 RBI to lead the Big 12 in week four. Her 19 RBI were 10 more than anyone else in the league and her 34 total bases were 15 more than the closest competitor.
Â
The Galt, California native homered in five of seven games, including twice against New Mexico State and a grand slam against Bowling Green to finish with a slugging percentage of 1.360 on the week.
Â
For the season, Hartwell leads the Big 12 with nine home runs, 28 RBI, 54 total bases and a 1.149 slugging percentage. The junior ranks second in the nation in slugging and is tied for fifth in the nation in home runs per game at 0.50.
Â
"Of course, I love her numbers," head coach Adrian Gregory said Saturday. "I love what she can do production wise, but I pick that kid day in and day out because of how hard she plays the game."
Â
Overall, Hartwell is one of a dozen Red Raiders to win Big 12 Player of the Week honors. Her numbers for the week are the best since Sandy James put together a six home run week with 20 RBI in March of 2011.
Â
The Red Raiders hit the road this week to start an 11-game, 10-day road trip in California March 9-18 where they'll face the likes of CSUN, UC Riverside, Long Beach State, Oregon State and Purdue.
