Senior captures second straight All-America selection
LUBBOCK, Texas – Following another historic season, senior Gabriela Talaba earned ITA All-America honors for the second straight year.
Â
After receiving her second straight bid to the NCAA Singles Championships, Talaba captured two wins and advanced to the Sweet 16. She is the first Lady Raider in program history to advance to the Round of 16 during the individual competition.
Â
Talaba posted a 17-9 singles record, winning 14 of those matches at the No. 1 position during dual play. She became the first player in school history to defeat a top-ranked individual as she captured a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 1 Bianca Turati (Texas) during the Sweet 16.
Â
Talaba guided the Lady Raiders to a fourth Sweet 16 appearance and second straight Elite Eight bid during her final season. She held a Top 20 ITA ranking for the entire season and was ranked No. 2 in the country during the preseason rankings (Sept. 12).
Â
Last season, Talaba became the first women's tennis player to be named an ITA All-American. Entering the singles competition, she received a Top 16 national seed.
Â
Talaba will go down as one of the most decorated players in school history. With an 83-30 career record, she has the fifth best career win percentage (0.735) in school history.
Â
She is a three-time All-Big 12 singles selection and earned the 2017 Big 12 Player of the Year and the 2015 Big 12 Freshman of the Year award. Talaba was also named the ITA Texas Region Senior Player of the Year.
