Hill, Atwood lead veterans while several newcomers impress.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Infused by a talented core of newcomers, Texas Tech volleyball's new and improved depth was on full display on Saturday as the Black squad earned a narrow 3-2 win over the Red team in the program's annual Red & Black Scrimmage.
Â
Juniors Emily Hill and Chandler Atwood, Tech's top two returning killers, led all players with 16 and 15 kills, respectively. However, it was the play of several newcomers that created the most buzz on a rainy evening at United Supermarkets Arena.
Â
Despite the black team consisting of returning starters and top rotational players for the first two sets, the young red squad held late leads in both opening frames before the veterans pulled out victories of 26-24 and 25-23.
Â
From there, the sides were intermingled for three more sets with the red side winning two of the final three frames, 15-25, 25-21, 15-12.
Â
"You saw the depth tonight," head coach Tony Graystone said. "We had what we thought was going to be our starting lineup for next week, and they barely got by them in the first two sets. That was really a positive more than anything."
Â
Freshman Katy Northcut started as the libero for the red squad and led all players with 19 digs in the first two frames.
Â
"Katy was lights out in the beginning and really showed well." Graystone said. "Both of the middles – Jessica [Langridge] had a great night. She blocked everything in sight and was real effective offensively. Andrea [Janss] was great too, so I was real happy with them."
Â
Langridge recorded nine kills at a .500 clip while fellow freshman middle Karrington Jones tallied five kills on .308 hitting. The duo also posted a presence at the net to aid Northcut on the back row.
Â
Janss, who sat out 2017 with a knee injury, showed off her powerful arm from the right side, finishing with 11 kills on the night at a .296 clip. Freshman Brooke Kanas added scoring support with 13 kills.
Â
Saturday marked the final preseason tune up for the Red Raiders before launching their 2018 regular season next week. Tech opens the season at home, hosting Rice, North Dakota and Northwestern State in the Red Raider Classic Aug. 24-25 at United Supermarkets Arena.
