LUBBOCK, Texas – In his first round as a Red Raider, Texas Tech freshman Markus Braadlie took Pebble Beach by storm in round one of the Carmel Cup on Friday.
Braadlie, from Baerum, Norway, started his day by eagling the par-5 second, and never lost steam. He birdied Nos. 4 and 6 before a bogey on nine, his lone blemish of the day. He bounced back with a birdie on 12, and then added two more on 14 and 18. His -6 66 puts him in fourth place overall.
As a team, the Red Raiders finished the day +1, tied for sixth with No. 4 Vanderbilt.
"Obviously I'm extremely proud of the way Markus [Braadlie] played, especially for his first official round with us," Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "I just wished it would have carried over to some of the other guys. As a team, we were pretty sloppy but I believe we will bounce back tomorrow in a nice way."
Having a Red Raider near the top of the leaderboard is not a foreign concept at Pebble Beach. Tech has claimed the last two Carmel Cup individual titles, with Fredrik Nilehn bringing one back to Lubbock in 2016, and Hurly Long winning, breaking the course record in the process, in 2017.
Joining Braadlie in the top 20 is Ivan Ramirez, who put down five birdies en route to a -1 71. Kyle Hogan, after firing a 33 on the front nine, turned in a 41 on the back, settling in at +2 for the round, tied for 35th.
Adam Blomme and Jansen Smith are tied for 40th (+3), and Thomas Allkins is tied for 41st (+4).
Tech will begin round 2 at 9 a.m. CT off hole No. 1, led by Thomas Allkins. He will be followed in 10-minute increments by Smith, Blomme, Hogan, Ramirez and Braadlie. The Red Raiders will be paired with Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Arkansas.
