Men's Tennis Prepares for Sunday Double Feature in Home Opener
January 19, 2019 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders return home for the first time since the 2018 spring campaign
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team will continue their spring slate with a pair of matches at the McLeod Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Red Raiders, who ignited themselves to a 2-0 start to the year with wins over Bryant University and the University of Tulsa, will be in pursuit of their second 4-0 jump to a spring campaign in four years with a pair of matches against Lamar University (Sunday - 11 a.m. CT) and the University of New Mexico (Sunday - 2:30 p.m. CT).
"It's going to be another good test for us," head coach Brett Masi said. "Our guys are still working on figuring their games out and building confidence this early in the season. Lamar and New Mexico are two tough opponents who have always given us great fights in the past. They are very well coached and I have no doubt that they will come in ready for us. Last year's match with New Mexico in particular was a very close match, and I'm sure this year will be no different."
The Red Raiders are aiming to build off of the success of their first weekend, in which six different players picked up at least one singles win. Tech's foundational success was fueled by the breakout performance of newcomer Franco Ribero who, in the anchor position, joined senior Artem Kapshuk as the only individuals to win both their singles matches, including a match-clinching comeback win in three sets against Tulsa in his collegiate debut for Ribero.
This weekend's home opener will also mark junior Bjorn Thomson's long awaited return to the McLeod Tennis Center, as the talented competitor from Birmingham, United Kingdom missed the 2018 spring campaign due to injury and has not competed in Lubbock since 2017.
Sunday's matches will be the home debut of highly touted freshman Lorenzo Battista of Italy and junior Parker Wynn, a recent transfer to the program.
