Weather Halts Opening Day of Big 12 Match Play

HOCKLEY, Texas – Texas Tech rolled over TCU and leads 3-0-3 against Iowa State at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament before weather delays and darkness halted the second session at the Club at Houston Oaks on Friday.
Teams completed the first session of the day and three matches of the second session finished. Iowa State and Texas Tech will complete their match on Saturday morning, beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT. The third session is scheduled to begin at approximately 8:30 a.m. CT on Saturday, followed by session four at 2 p.m. outside Houston.
The Red Raiders opened the day with a dominant 5-1 win over TCU to begin the Big 12 Match Play Tournament. Against the Horned Frogs, Sandy Scott earned a 3&2 win and Andy Lopez secured a 3&1 victory. Ludvig Aberg and Kyle Hogan each won 2&1 decisions and Markus Braadlie was a 1UP winner in the morning matchup. Other morning winners were Texas, Kansas and Baylor. Iowa State did not play an early match before facing off against the Red Raiders in the second round.
Hogan, Braadlie and Lopez have each already secured wins in the match against ISU, while Jamie Stewart, Aberg and Scott are each tied with their opponent. Hogan earned a 4&2 win, Lopez eased to a 3&2 decision and Braadlie was a 2UP winner in his match. Scott is through 14 holes in his fight, while Stewart and Aberg are thru 16 going into Saturday.
With seven matches complete, Texas currently leads Pool A with 6 points while Texas Tech has 3 points. Kansas tops Pool B with 6 points. Baylor and Kansas State have 3 points each.
This is the second year of the event as the Big 12 was the first conference to host its own Match Play tournament in 2018, utilizing the format that determines the NCAA Men's Golf national champion.
The tournament format consists of Pool Play for two-and-a-half days (five sessions) followed by a Final Round the afternoon of day three. Match Play will be conducted during all rounds.
During the Pool Play portion, each team will play matches during four sessions and have one session off. Teams will get three points for a win and one point for a draw. During the Final Round of Day 3, the Final Match will feature the team with the highest point total from Pool A competing against the team with the highest point total from Pool B. The Third Place Match will be between the teams with the second highest point totals from their respective pools. Each team will participate during the Final Afternoon.
