October 11, 2019 | Softball
The Texas Tech softball team finished its fall season with a 2-2 tie.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Red & Black teams both tallied five hits leading up to a 2-2 tie in the final game of the Texas Tech softball team's fall series, Friday evening at Rocky Johnson Field.
Â
Michaela Cochran led things off for the Black Team with an infield single in the top of the first. A sacrifice bunt attempt from Heaven Burton resulted in a pop up to Erin Edmoundson – the starting pitcher for the Red Team – who picked off Cochran at first for the double play.
Â
The Black Team got on board first thanks to a huge knock by Maddie Westmoreland. With two outs, Breanna Russell reached first after being hit by a pitch. Westmoreland then scorched a full-count pitch over the left-field wall to put the Black Team up 2-0 in the top of the fourth.
Â
Morgan Hornback kept the Red Team remained hitless until the bottom of the fourth when Zoe Jones blooped a single right out of the shortstop's reach to begin the frame. Jones took advantage of a ground out and passed ball and quickly moved over to third base. With one out, Shelby Henderson reached on a fielder's choice to second base, and the Black Team fielder tried to throw Jones out at home. However, Jones slid in safely to put a run on the board for the Red Team and bring the score to 2-1.
Â
The Black Team produced a few base runners in the top of the fifth, but the Red Team got out of the jam by throwing a runner out at second on an attempted steal and inducing an easy pop-up. Both teams went down in order the following inning before the Red Team tied the game.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth Jones hit a one-out, home run over the center-field fence to bring the score to 2-2. The Red Team put two more runners on base, but reliever Missy Zoch got out of the inning with a strikeout and fly out.
Â
Going into the seventh inning tied at 2-2, the Black Team tried to capitalize on a single from Kelcy Leach, but a strikeout ended the frame. With two outs, the Red Team was close to walking it off. Peyton Blythe hit a long double to the left-field wall, then moved over to third on a wild pitch. Zoch struck out the last batter for the final out of the frame to end the game in a tie. Â
Â
Edmoundson threw a full seven innings for the Red Team, giving up just two runs while she picked up six strikeouts. Hornback started on the mound for the Black Team and tossed 3.1 innings of work. Hornback collected one strikeout before Zoch entered the game in relief in the fourth inning.
