Red Raiders Open Play at Tavistock Collegiate

WINDERMERE, Florida – Texas Tech is tied for seventh after shooting 3-over-par as a team in the opening round of the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational on Sunday at the Isleworth Golf & Country Club.
The No. 2-rated Red Raiders are nine strokes behind tournament leader Central Florida which opened the three-round competition at 8-under followed by Florida (3-under), Cal and Minnesota (1-under), LSU (even) and Texas (1-over). Tech is playing in its final Fall tournament after opening the season with wins at The Carmel Cup, Iverness Intercollegiate and Big 12 Match Play.
Kyle Hogan will go into the second day of the tournament in 12th place and eight shots back of the leader Jack Trent (UNLV). Sandy Scott is currently 19th on the leaderboard for the Red Raiders who will complete the event with 18 holes on Monday before the final round on Tuesday morning.Â
Hogan led the Red Raiders with a 1-under 71 round where he had six birdies. A junior from Cypress, Hogan was the tournament leader early on when he jumped out 4-under after beginning with four birdies and four pars. He started on the back-9 and fell back some with a double-bogey on No. 18. On his final nine holes of the opening round he would make two birdies but also three bogeys. Scott will enter the second round on Tuesday at even-par after recording five birdies, three bogeys and a double on Sunday. Scott was a even-par after is opening nine holes on the back-9 before making three straight birdies on the first three holes on the front-side. At 3-under after a birdie on his 16th hole of the day, Scott would make bogey and double-bogey to finish at even.
Ludvig Aberg finished his first round in Florida with a 1-over 73, while Andy Lopez and Garrett Martin both opened with 75s. Aberg made three birdies and four bogeys in his round and Lopez and Martin each had three birdies, but also a double and four bogeys each. Lopez, who is currently ranked No. 7 in the Golfstat individual rankings, is coming off a 5-0 record at the Big 12 Match Play Tournament and also has a tournament win coming at the Iverness Intercollegiate. He came into the Tavistock with a 69.42 scoring average for the Red Raiders.
Along with the Tavistock, Texas Tech will be represented by Jansen Smith, Jamie Stewart and Markus Braadlie as individuals at the Little Rock Invitational on Monday and Tuesday in Arkansas. The 36-hole tournament will be played at the Chenal Country Club with the trio of Tech players scheduled to start at 8:15 on Monday.
Tech received four first-place votes in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll that was released on Friday, the most of any program outside of Georgia Tech which is the top-ranked team in the nation with 19 first-place votes. The Yellow Jackets rose to the top spot after being ranked No. 2 last week. They are followed by Wake Forest, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Pepperdine in the top-5.
