Men's Tennis Places Three in Singles Round of 16 in Waco

WACO, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team advanced three players to the round of 16 and two doubles pairings to the quarterfinals at the ITA Texas Regionals in Waco on Saturday.
The Red Raiders concluded a loaded schedule on Saturday with 12 match wins across all brackets of play, including 11 in the singles and doubles elimination brackets.
Tech's day began with a pair of doubles wins in the round of 32, including a victory by the first-seeded duo of Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn, who took their match 8-6 over UTSA. Thomson and Wynn's match was quickly followed by another win for the Red Raiders, as Jackson Cobb and Ilgiz Valiev won a tight match, 8-7(2), over conference rival TCU.
In the morning's singles action, all four Red Raiders who advanced to the round 32 did so in straight sets. Valiev defeated Canal of Lamar 6-3, 6-1 and was soon followed by sophomore Franco Ribero, who also defeated his opponent from Lamar by a dominant score of 6-1, 6-1. Thomson moved on with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Chhabra of ACU and freshman Reed Collier advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Bianchi of SMU.
In singles consolation action, Wynn won his opening match at 6-2, 6-3 over SMU and will square off with the Mustangs' Redelijk on Sunday at approximately 10 a.m. CT.
Elimination bracket action continued in the evening with another win by Valiev in straight sets, this time at a 6-4, 7-6(2) mark over Chakravarthi of SMU. Collier also advanced to the round of 16 with a thrilling 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 comeback win over Salmon of Rice.
Singles play for the Red Raiders concluded on Saturday with a three-set victory by Ribero over fifth-seeded Tamarit of SMU, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
In round of 16 doubles action, Thomson and Wynn advanced to Sunday's quarterfinal round with an 8-4 defeat of Bullard/McDonald of Texas and will be joined by Cobb and Valiev following an 8-6 triumph over Leon/Rosales of SMU.
Play on Sunday will begin with the doubles quarterfinals, as first-seeded Thomson/Wynn will square off with Fine/Sheehy of ACU at approximately 9 a.m. CT. Cobb and Valiev will take on the second-seed in Ito/Sigsgaard of Texas.
The round of 16 in singles play will start with Valiev taking on third-seeded Vacherot of Texas A&M. Ribero will battle it out with Rollins of Texas A&M and Collier will play Leon of SMU. All singles matches will begin around 10:45 a.m. CT.
