Collier Advances to Semifinal Round of ITA Texas Regionals

WACO, Texas – Texas Tech men's tennis freshman Reed Collier picked up a pair of wins on Sunday to advance to Monday's singles semifinals at the ITA Texas Regionals in Waco.
Collier's day began with an impressive 7-6, 6-4 win over Ethan Leon of SMU, which placed him in a quarterfinal spar with fellow Red Raider teammate Franco Ribero, who won his round of 16 match against Rollins of Texas A&M at a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 clip.
In the battle of the Red Raiders, Ribero took an early lead on Collier by taking the first set at a three-game margin. Collier would bounce back in a big way, as he went on to take the next two sets, ultimately moving on with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Collier is slated to take on third-seeded Vacherot of Texas A&M in the semifinals on Monday at approximately 9 a.m. CT.
14th-seeded Valiev also competed in the singles round of 16, as he was defeated by Vacherot in two sets, 6-3, 6-4.
In Sunday's doubles matches, the first-seeded duo of Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn snagged a quarterfinal win of their own with an 8-4 win over Fine/Sheehy of ACU to advance to the semifinal round where they would eventually fall to fourth-seeded Dickerson/Soto of Baylor, 7-6(6), 6-4. Jackson Cobb and Valiev were knocked off in the quarterfinals by two-seeded Ito/Sigsgaard of Texas, 8-6.
