Jordyn Brooks leads all linebackers nationally with 15.5 tackles for a loss already this season
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior linebacker Jordyn Brooks was named a semifinalist Tuesday for the prestigious Chuck Bednarik Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top defensive player by the Maxwell Football Club.
Brooks is one of only three Big 12 players to be recognized among the 20 Bednarik Award semifinalists, joining Oklahoma defensive lineman Neville Gallimore and linebacker Kenneth Murray. He is also one of six linebackers on the semifinalists list.
Brooks, a native of Houston, is in the midst of his best season as a Red Raider as he easily leads the Big 12 with 87 tackles, including an impressive 15.5 that have come from behind the line of scrimmage. He's added three sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and 10 quarterback hurries as well.
Nationally, Brooks is among the FBS leaders in several categories, ranking third in tackles for a loss per game (1.9), fifth in solo tackles per game (6.4) and seventh in total tackles per game (10.9). He leads all linebackers nationally with his 15.5 tackles for a loss, a category he also ranks tied for second among all FBS players.
The impressive start to the season has allowed Brooks to already enter the Tech career record book for tackles as he has 346 entering next weekend's road trip to West Virginia. Brooks passed Ryan Aycock (2000-03) for ninth all-time in program history against Kansas and needs 16 tackles to tie Cody Davis (2009-12) for eighth in the school record book.
The Maxwell Football Club will trim the list of 20 semifinalists down to three finalists on Nov. 25 ahead of the Dec. 12 Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN where the 25th Chuck Bednarik Award winner will be announced.
In addition to the Bednarik Award, Brooks is also a member of watch lists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (top defensive player nationally) and the Butkus Award (top linebacker). He was named a second team Midseason All-American two weeks ago by the likes of The Athletic and Athlon Sports.
Kickoff between Tech and West Virginia is slated for 11 a.m. on Nov. 9 in Morgantown. Television coverage will be provided on either ESPN2 or ESPNU as well as the Texas Tech Sports Network.
