Holyfield Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior TJ Holyfield has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after averaging 17.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in a pair of Red Raider wins to open the season.
An Albuquerque, New Mexico native, Holyfield led No. 11 Texas Tech with 20 points last Saturday in the win over Bethune-Cookman after going for 15 points in the opener against Eastern Illinois on Tuesday. He had six rebounds in both wins and shot 15-for-19 combined in the two games from the field. Against EIU, Holyfield knocked down 7 of 8 shots and also had three assists before going 8-for-11 in the second game. He also finished the week with three blocks, two coming against EIU and then one against BCU.
Holyfield is in his first season with the Red Raiders after transferring from SFA where he was an All-Southland Conference selection after averaging 12.9 points and 6.4 rebounds in his junior season (2017-18). After two games at Tech, Holyfield has now scored 1,116 points and has 607 rebounds in his collegiate career.
Tyrese Haliburton earned his first player of the week after opening the season with two double-doubles, averaging 13.5 points and 13.0 assists. The sophomore guard also contributed 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals while shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 40 percent behind the arc. Against MVSU, Haliburton had 12 points, 14 assists, seven rebounds and six steals. He followed with 15 points, 12 assists, seven rebounds and two steals at Oregon State.
Holyfield and the Red Raiders return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday against Houston Baptist at the Chaparral Center in Midland.
