November 30, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
Texas Tech’s senior class leaves as the winningest class since 2003.
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech volleyball team tried to make a comeback, but the squad fell short as it dropped its regular-season finale against Kansas State, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-20), Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at United Supermarkets Arena.Â
The Red Raiders (17-13, 7-9 Big 12) combined for 30 kills on the day where freshman Caitlin Dugan paced the crew with nine kills. Senior standout Emily Hill and sophomore Karrington Jones followed close behind with seven kills apiece and junior Emerson Solano led the way with 12 digs against the Wildcats.Â
With the loss, Tech finishes the regular season with a 17-13 overall record and a 7-9 mark in Big 12 conference play – it's best league record since the 2002 season.
SET ONE: KANSAS STATE 25, TEXAS TECH 22
Senior Kylie Rittimann kicked off her final match at United Supermarkets Arena with a pair of aces and a Kansas State error helped the Red Raiders to an early 3-0 lead. A kill from Jones and two Wildcat errors extended Tech's lead, 6-3, but it wouldn't last long as Kansas State pieced together a 9-2 run that put the Red Raiders in a 12-8 hole. Dugan broke up the momentum with her second kill of the day, but the teams swapped a pair of points immediately after. Kills from Jones and Hill interrupted a 3-0 swing for the Wildcats and five straight points for the Red Raiders – highlighted by kills and a block from Brooke Kanas Kanas and Allison White – closed a five-point gap and tied the set, 20-20. A kill off the hand of Emily Hill tied up the set once more at 21-21, but one final, 4-1 push for the Wildcats closed the first set 25-22 in favor of Kansas State.Â
SET TWO: KANSAS STATE 25, TEXAS TECH 16
Dugan came out swinging to start the second and an ace from Solano gave Tech another early 3-0 lead. Kills from Kirby, Dugan and a pair of Kansas State errors pushed Tech to a 7-5 advantage, but the Wildcats crept back into the set and tied up the second at eight points apiece. An untimely 9-2 run for the Wildcats. Kills from Kanas halted the Wildcats' momentum and another kill from Hill made it a four-point set at 18-14. Five straight points for Kansas State plagued the Red Raiders before a Wildcat service error ended the run. Jones tried to keep Tech in striking distance, but they couldn't hang on and the Red Raiders dropped the second set, 25-16.Â
SET THREE: KANSAS 25, TEXAS TECH 20
Laying down Tech's first point again, Dugan delivered Tech's opening kill of the third set. Kansas State answered with a 5-1 run, but Tech responded with an ace and kill from Kirby to cut into the Wildcats' lead, 7-5. The teams swapped points until a 6-2 run for Kansas State put Tech in a 15-9 hole. However, four straight Wildcat errors closed the gap and brought the Red Raiders within two points at 15-13. The teams alternated kills until a 3-0 swing for the Wildcats moved the set to 23-17. A Kansas State service error and kill from Jones brought the Red Raiders within four points and a block from Jones and Kylie Trefflich stopped Kansas State on set point. However, an untimely Tech service error ended the match and the Red Raiders dropped their final set of the season, 25-20.Â
After today, the Red Raiders will say goodbye to seniors Chandler Atwood, Maggie Sagers, Kylie Rittimann and Emily Hill. The four leave Tech as the winningest class since 2003 with 63 wins in their four seasons.Â
