February 14, 2019 | Women's Golf
Sofia Garcia moved up to no. 15 in preliminary spring rankings Thursday afternoon
NORMAN, Okla. – Texas Tech sophomore golfer Sofia Garcia was elevated to No. 15 in the latest Arnold Palmer Cup rankings, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Thursday.
The Arnold Palmer Cup is an annual Ryder Cup-style tournament that pits the top six men's and women's collegiate golfers from the United States against the top six international players. The tournament will be held from June 7-9 at the Alotian Club in Roland, Arkansas.
The rankings are built using Golfstat's NCAA Player Ranking as an index, while rewarding players with additional points for wins and high finishes. The international team will consist of the men's and women's winners of the R&A Scholars Tournament, four committee selections and a coaches pick.
Garcia, who will need to move up at least nine spots to participate in the Arnold Palmer Cup, will begin her spring campaign on Saturday at the Mercer Invitational in Atlanta. She finished the fall season with a team-leading 71.0 scoring average, which included a top-11 showing in all four events.
The next rankings for the Arnold Palmer Cup will be released on February 28.
