Tech Softball Run-Rules No. 13/15 Arizona State in Five
February 21, 2019 | Softball
Texas Tech earned its second season win over a ranked opponent in its first game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Grinding out its first run-rule over a ranked opponent in over a decade, a big first inning helped the Texas Tech softball team (11-0) to an 8-0, five-inning shutout over No. 13/15 Arizona State in its opening game of the 2019 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Â
Surrendering just one hit through five full innings, sophomore hurler Erin Edmoundson's (7-0) third shutout of the year marks Tech's first shutout over a Top 25 team since its 2-0 win over California on Feb. 20, 2016. The last Red Raider run-rule against ranked opponent dates back to 2001 when Tech posted a 9-1 win over Iowa.
Â
Sophomore Kelcy Leach highlighted Tech's nine-hit contest with her first home run of the season in the first inning. Veterans Karli Hamilton and Jessica Hartwell both recorded a pair of hits while five Red Raiders tallied one.
Â
Edmoundson posted a quick first inning after she recorded a pair of strikeouts and a line out to second. The Red Raiders came out of the gates ready to go as they hit through the lineup and put up six early runs on the Sun Devils.
Â
Heaven Burton led Tech's offensive surge with a leadoff walk and a single into left from Jessica Hartwell put the pair in scoring position. With one out, Trenity Edwards continued her RBI streak to five games as she crushed a two-RBI single down the left-field line to give Tech an early 2-0 lead.
Â
Freshman Zoe Jones followed up with an RBI single to left and Leach gave the Red Raiders a comfortable 6-0 lead on a three-run blast that sailed over the left-field wall.
Burton laid down a two-out bunt to keep Tech alive in the bottom of the fifth and Hamilton moved her over to third with a single through the right side. After an error behind the plate allowed Burton to cross home plate, Hartwell scored Hamilton on a single into left to give Tech an 8-0 advantage.Â
Â
Edmoundson continued to own the circle through the next four innings and did not surrender a single hit to the Sun Devils until the last inning when Arizona State's Alli Tatnall poked a single into shallow center field. However, Edmoundson answered back and induced her 10th fly ball of the game to clinch the 8-0 shutout.
Â
The Red Raiders remain undefeated through 11 straight games and Edmoundson improved to 7-0 with the run-rule shutout.
