Freshman multis athlete sets school record in first collegiate heptathlon.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech rounded out a strong prep weekend for the upcoming Big 12 Championships Saturday.
After racking up 3,205 points through the first four events of the heptathlon Friday, Axel Hubert chased down a school record on his second day. Hubert, who was competing in his first collegiate heptathlon, PR'd in six of seven events to compile 5,746 points overall. The total knocked down teammate Clark Griffith's program record of 5,334. Hubert's mark places him second in the Big 12 and sixth in the country.
On the track, Vincent Crisp went after his own record in the 600-yard, but narrowly missed after turning in a 1:08.61. The time sits fourth in program history, as the defending Big 12 Champion has still yet to lose a 600-yard race since beginning the event last indoor season.
Tech also excelled in the shorter races – especially on the women's side – as all three 200m runners PR'd. They were led by D'Jenne Egharevba, who placed third with a 23:49 to jump into eighth in Tech history. She was joined in personal records by Peyton Ricks (23.975) and Robyn Byrd (23.978), who placed 11thand 12th, respectively.
The men's 200m race was highlighted by Derrius Rodgers, who set a personal record with a 21.00 to win the event. KeSean Carter ran a solid race as well, turning in a 21.33.
Tech's relay teams were back in action for the first time in two weeks. The men's side of Divine Oduduru, Vincent Crisp, Tyreek Mathis and Andrew Hudson turned in a 3:07.53 to place second.
The Red Raiders will host one final regular season meet, the Matador Qualifier, before the Big 12 Championships next Friday, Feb. 15. Tickets may be purchased here.
