Hartwell Snaps RBI Record in Run-Rule Win Over Maine
March 17, 2019 | Softball
Senior Jessica Hartwell picked up the 150th RBI of her career against Maine.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior All-American Jessica Hartwell broke the program RBI record in the No. 10/13 Texas Tech softball team's 10-2 run-rule over Maine, Sunday morning at Tiger Softball Complex.
Â
The Galt, Calif., native recorded a team-leading three RBI against the Black Bears to reach an impressive 150 RBI in her career. She surpassed alumna Mikey Kenney, who racked up 149 RBI from 2010-13.
Â
The Red Raiders bounced back from a slow offensive outing yesterday and out-hit Maine 12-1 in five innings. Heaven Burton went a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI while sophomores Trenity Edwards and Breanna Russell belted back-to-back home runs in the first inning. Taylor Satchell was the other Red Raider to power a home run against the Black Bears.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Missy Zoch was masterful through four full innings and improved to a perfect 10-0 with the five-inning run rule. The junior transfer tallied seven strikeouts before freshman Morgan Hornback finished the game in the top of the fifth to complete the shutout.
Â
Zoch posted a three up, three down frame to start the first and Tech powered four runs on four hits in the bottom half to take an early lead. Karli Hamilton began the four-run first with a double into left field and Burton placed runners on the corner with a textbook bunt.
Â
Hartwell brought in Tech's first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right field and a two-run homer from Edwards put the Red Raiders up, 3-0. Russell immediately followed with her fourth home run of the season to give Tech a 4-0 advantage.
Â
The offensive barrage continued in the second when Kelcy Leach and Yvonne Whaley collected back-to-back singles. A grounder from Hamilton moved the pair into scoring position and a Burton RBI single to short made it a 5-0 ball game.
Â
Showing her speed, Burton stole second and an error on the play allowed Whaley to score from third. Tech posted its final run of the inning when Hartwell drove in her second RBI of the day on a ground ball to third.
Â
The Tech defense held Maine scoreless once again in the top of the third and a leadoff home run from Satchell extended Tech's lead, 8-0.
Â
Riding the momentum, Zoch used 12 pitches to strike out the side in the top of the fourth and Tech kept rolling with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Hamilton and Burton use back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners and Hartwell set the program record with the 150th RBI of her career to put the Red Raiders ahead, 9-0.
Â
Putting the final nail in the coffin, pinch hitter Olga Zamarripa drove in the second RBI of her career – and Tech's final run of the day – in her first at-bat this season. Hornback entered the circle to close out the game and she clinched the 10-0 run-rule with a ground out and two strikeouts.
Â
Tech improved to 27-2 overall with their 11th run-rule victory of the season.
