Fearless Champion Open underway with Texas Tech win in hammer throw.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech's Fearless Champion Open began Friday with just two Red Raiders in competition, both in the hammer throw. Tech came away with the win in their lone event thanks to Dorleta Armendariz-Lasa.
Armendariz-Lasa's victory in the hammer throw came by way of a top mark of 178'-10" (54.50m) – a season best for the junior. It is just the second time in her career she has topped 54 meters, something that is especially exciting considering she is returning from injury. Now healthy, the junior is chasing the personal-record 184'-4" (56.20m) that she launched last season.
"I'm pleased that we're making improvement," said assistant coach Cliff Felkins, who oversees the throws group. "I'm trying to get her to the point where she can throw at least what she did last year and score at the conference meet, and I think we're making progress."
Also competing Friday was Seasons Usual, who with her first throw nearly surpassed her PR of 165'-7" (50.48m), which was set at last week's Wes Kittley Invitational. Her mark was good for fourth place. Usual's improvement in the hammer is encouraging, but Felkins is more excited – at least in the shorter term – for her in the discus.
"Seasons can be a stud in the hammer in time," Felkins said. "However, that's a long-term goal. Right now, she's working on shot put and discus, which she will throw at conference. Seasons is a very good discus thrower, and she will shine tomorrow."
Usual's discus will get Saturday's field events underway at 1 p.m. in the throws area. Concurrently, the remainder of the Red Raiders will be in action at the Fuller Track and Field for the running portion of the Fearless Champion Open. Live results will be available here.
