Texas Tech takes part in its final tournament prior to the Big 12 Championships this week in Argyle
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf program will face its final test prior to the Big 12 Championships beginning Monday when the Red Raiders tee off at the Bruzzy Challenge held at the Lantana Golf Club in Argyle, Texas.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament represents a return to stroke play for the Red Raiders, who took part in the Lamkin Invitational and its match-play format earlier this week in San Diego. Tech finished 1-2 over three matches with its lone winning coming in the finale against UC Irvine.
Prior to that, the Red Raiders, who placed eighth at the inaugural Bruzzy Challenge a year ago, were playing possibly their best golf of the season after finishing second at the BYU Invitational and winning the Valspar Augusta Invitational over Spring Break.
Tech is currently ranked 43rd in the latest Golfstat poll, which, at this time, would likely place the Red Raiders in an NCAA Regional for the ninth time in head coach JoJo Robertson's 10 seasons. Tech has advanced to the NCAA Regional round in each of the past four seasons with two additional trips to the NCAA Championships during that span as well.
THE LINEUP
Robertson will utilize a lineup consisting of senior Mami Yamamoto, sophomores Sofia Garcia and Louisa Brunt as well as freshmen Anna Dong and Cecilie Nielsen this week. Fellow freshman Destiny Arenas will also take part in the event as an individual.
THE FIELD
The 15-team field will have a heavy Texas-flavor this week as eight team hail from the Lone Star State, namely No. 2 Texas, No. 19 TCU, No. 28 Houston and No. 35 Baylor. Tech will be joined by fellow in-state schools Texas A&M, SMU and host North Texas as well.
The remainder of the field consists of the likes of three top-50 teams in No. 20 Miami, No. 37 Iowa and No. 41 Ole Miss as well as BYU, Kansas State, Maryland and Missouri. The Red Raiders are the eighth-highest ranked team in the field, giving Tech an opportunity to move up in the polls late in the season.
THE COURSE
The Lantana Golf Club is set for a 6,421 yard, par-72 layout this week in its first year hosting the Bruzzy Challenge. The inaugural event was hosted at the Maridoe Golf Club a year ago.
THE FORMAT
The Red Raiders will play 36 holes Monday to start the tournament before finishing with a final round Tuesday morning. Both days will feature an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
LIVE RESULTS
Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament at www.GolfStat.com.
UP NEXT
The Big 12 Championships will run April 14-16 at the Golf Club of Oklahoma in Tulsa. The Red Raider will learn their postseason fate nearly a week later when each of the four NCAA Regional fields are unveiled at 5:30 p.m. on April 24 live on the Golf Channel.
