Fifth-Inning Surge Powers No. 15 Texas Tech Past Baylor
April 12, 2019 | Softball
Trenity Edwards belted a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to help Tech to its 31st win of the season.
WACO, Texas – Timely hitting and a two-run home run from sophomore Trenity Edwards helped the No. 15 Texas Tech softball program overcome a narrow deficit as the Red Raiders bested Baylor, 6-2, Friday evening at Getterman Stadium.
Â
Edwards led the lineup with two hits and five other Red Raiders – Karli Hamilton, Heaven Burton, Breanna Russell, Zoe Jones and Peyton Blythe – tallied one. Edwards and Russell both recorded two RBI while senior Jessica Hartwell collected one.
Â
Now 31-8, the Red Raiders' fourth conference victory of the season helped the squad match their win total from one year ago when Tech went 31-28.
Â
In her 19th start of the season, junior Missy Zoch held the Bears to just two runs and five hits in 6.1 innings of work. She picked up three strikeouts in her 13th win of the season and Erin Edmoundson, who entered the game with the tying run on deck in the bottom of the seventh, closed the door with a strikeout to earn her second save this season.Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Tech wasted no time offensively as the Red Raiders struck first in the opening frame. Burton got Tech rolling with a single to the catcher and a passed ball and wild pitch moved her over to third.
Â
On one out, Russell bounced a grounder to the Baylor third baseman, but Burton came racing home and scored on the throw to first to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Â
However, Tech's lead was short-lived as Baylor answered back in the bottom of the inning with one run off one hit and an error. The Bears extended their lead in the third and took a 2-1 advantage after an RBI single plated a leadoff double.
Â
The Red Raiders fought their way back in the top of the fourth when Edwards kicked off the inning with a double to the left-center field gap. Freshman Miranda Padilla came in to run at second and, after she moved to third on a wild pitch, Hartwell tied up the game at two runs a piece with a sacrifice fly to deep right field.
Â
Zoch and the Tech defense held the Bears silent in the bottom half before a big fifth inning gave the Red Raiders their second lead of the day. Baylor starter Sidney Holman issued a leadoff walk to pinch hitter Shelby Henderson before Hamilton blasted a double to the center-field wall to put runners on second and third.
Â
A passed ball allowed Tech's third run to cross the plate and an RBI double from Russell lifted the Red Raiders to a two-run lead. On one out, Edwards blasted a two-run home run that bounced up and over the fence to extend the Red Raiders' lead, 6-2.
Â
Baylor put runners on the corners with one out in the final fame and Tech brought in Edmoundson to close out the game. With the tying run on deck, the defense buckled down and a line out and strikeout ended the game to secure the Red Raiders' 6-2 victory.
