Shyne Joins Tech Football Program as Grad Transfer

Armand Shyne arrives in Lubbock after recording 512 rushing and five touchdowns at Utah in 2018
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells bolstered the Red Raiders' running game Wednesday with the signing of graduate transfer Armand Shyne to an athletic scholarship agreement.

Shyne, who arrives in Lubbock following three seasons at Utah, becomes the second graduate transfer to sign with the Red Raiders this week alone, joining defensive back Zech McPhearson (Penn State) who signed with Tech on Tuesday. He will have one year of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2019 season.

Shyne is coming off his best season at Utah as he recorded 512 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground en route to helping lead the Utes to the 2018 Pac-12 Championship game against Washington.

His best performance of the season came against Oregon as Shyne carried 26 times for a career-high 174 yards in the win. It was the second career 100-yard outing for Shyne as he previously totaled 101 yards against Arizona during his 2016 sophomore season. He also eclipsed the 90-yard mark twice that season against Cal (99 yards) and San Jose State (92 yards).

Shyne closed his Utah career with 885 career rushing yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 4.5 yards per attempt over the 2016 and 2018 seasons. He redshirted the 2017 season following a preseason injury suffered during fall camp and was limited to only five games in 2016 due to injury.

Utah signed Shyne following one season at American River College in California where he collected 128 carries for 734 yards and eight touchdowns as a freshman. He earned All-North-Cal League honors after posting three 100-yard games in 2015 and averaging an impressive 5.7 yards per carry.

Shyne developed into one of the top running backs out of Northern California during his prep career at Skyline High School in Oakland. A two-time All-Oakland Athletic League honoree, Shyne rushed for more than 1,000 yards during each of his final two seasons, including an impressive 1,828 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior, which featured a 300-yard performance and four games of 200 or more yards.

In addition to his success on the gridiron, Shyne was a standout for Skyline's track and field program, qualifying for the state meet in both the shot put and discus as a senior. As a youth, he also competed in the javelin at the U.S. Track and Field Junior Olympic Championships, winning the event two years in a row (2008-09) as well as the shot put in 2007.

Shyne will arrive at Tech this summer in time for preparations for the 2019 season, which begins Aug. 31 when the Red Raiders host Montana State inside Jones AT&T Stadium.
