Garcia Featured on April's Annika Award Watch List
April 24, 2019 | Women's Golf
Texas Tech sophomore one of 15 players remaining
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech women's golfer Sofia Garcia was listed on April's Annika Award Watch List on Wednesday, as announced by Golfweek Magazine.
Â
The award, given annually to the nation's top female collegiate golfer, is voted upon by college golfers, coaches and members of the golf media. April's list was narrowed down to 15 players from 25 in early March. Garcia is the only player from the Big 12 Conference to make April's list.
Â
Garcia was recently ranked at No. 12 in the Golfweek poll, making her the highest-ranked individual in the Big 12. She currently leads the Red Raiders with a 71.55 scoring average. In 12 contests throughout the 2018-19 season, she has racked up three individual titles and six top-five finishes.
Â
Should it hold, her stroke average would break the all-time record for a single season, vaulting her past Red Raider greats Gabby Barker and Kim Kaufman, who share the title with an average of 72.3 strokes per round.
Â
Garcia also broke the single-round scoring record in March, as she fired a final-round 64 at the BYU at Entrada Classic in St. George, Utah, helping Tech to a second place finish, their fourth top-three team finish of the year.
Â
The final watch list will be released following the NCAA Regionals, where the field will be trimmed to 10 players.
Â
Garcia and the Red Raider golf team will learn their postseason fate later this evening, as the NCAA Selection Show is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. CT.
